Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) was initially discovered as a molecule found in platelet α-granules that promoted the proliferation of mesenchymal cells. It is now known that PDGF is produced by many kinds of cells other than platelets and possesses a wide range of biological properties. In vitro, PDGF-BB, PDGF dimer, promotes chemotaxis in white blood cells as well as proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells, fibroblasts and capillary endothelial cells. Clinical application of PDGF is being investigated after it has been recently found that the molecule is involved in atherosclerosis as well as angiogenesis and metastasis of solid tumors.
