[BIOCHEMISTRY]

Diabetes

Resistin is a dimeric hormone secreted by mast cells and is attracting attention as a substance which impairs insulin action. TNF-alpha and free fatty acid are known as resistins.Serum resistin concentration decreases with administration of antidiabetic drugs and is elevated when obesity occurs. It was also found that administration of resistin-neutralizing substance to obese mice restored serum glucose levels and insulin action. Based on these findings, it is believed that resistin is a key link between obesity and diabetes.
