Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) was originally discovered as a molecule in platelet α-granules that promotes the proliferation of cells of mesenchymal origin. It is now known that PDGF is produced in many other types of cells and has a wide range of biological functions. In vitro,PDGF-BB, PDGF dimer, induces chemotaxis in leukocytes and promotes the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cell, fibroblasts and capillary endothelial cells. Clinical application of PDGF is being investigated as it has been clarified that the molecule is involved in arteriosclerosis as well as solid cancer angiogenesis and metastasis.
