Macrophage colony-stimulating factor (MCSF) is a potent hemopoietic factor produced in a variety of cells such as lymphocytes, monocytes, fibroblasts, epithelial cells, myoblasts and osteoblasts. It acts on progenitor cells of monocytes and macrophages accelerating differentiation and proliferation while it promotes survival of mature cells. In addition, it exhibits variegated activities; it promotes migration and phagocytosis of macrophages, acts on osteoclast progenitor cells inducing expression of RANK, and inhibits apoptosis until differentiation of osteoclasts.
