The macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) was reported as the first cytokine produced by activated T lymphocytes. The MIF is known to initiate inflammatory response, to be involved in macrophage activation, and to play an important role in endotoxic shock. It also shows tautomerase activity on the methyl esters of D-dopachrome and L-dopachrome and has a structure similar to the isomerases of Escherichia coli.
