Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is a cytokine produced by various types of cells including T cells, monocytes, fibroblasts and epithelial cells. It is involved in a wide range of functions such as B cell differentiation/proliferation; antibody production; induction of megakaryocyte extension through interaction with IL-3; platelet production; and the expression of acute-phase reactants in the liver. IL-6 triggers intracellular signaling via the dimeric protein that consists of a IL-6Rα chain and a gp130 component.
