Amphiregulin is an epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like growth factor and stimulates proliferation of keratinocytes, epithelial cells and fibroblasts mediating EGF/TGF-alpha receptor. It also inhibits the growth of certain carcinoma cell lines. In the body, amphiregulin is produced as a single-pass transmembrane protein and its extracellular domain containing six conserved cysteine residues is released by proteolytical processing. This product consists of 98 amino acid residues.
