Macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) is defined as a factor that specifically induces the formation of monocyte colonies in semisolid media. M-CSF influences hematopoietic stem cells to differentiate into monocytes and macrophages. It also extends the life span of mature monocytes and upregulates the production of cytokines such as G-CSF, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α. Furthermore, M-CSF stimulates phagocytic and chemotactic activity in monocytes and macrophages and increases cell toxicity by enhancing SOD production. In addition, M-CSF delays apoptosis in osteoclasts until they differentiate by binding to osteoclast progenitors and inducing the expression of RANK.
