Interleukin-1β is an inflammatory cytokine produced in a variety of cell species such as monocytes, tissue macrophages, and keratinocytes.
The IL-1 receptors belong to Toll-like Receptor family and present various subtypes. IL-1β and IL-1α combine with Type I IL-1R and transmit signals into cells mediating IL-1R AcP, which is a co-receptor of IL-1R. IL-1β and IL-1α have amino acid sequences homologous at 62% and exhibit almost the same biological activities. They differ in the amount of glycosylation and activity as a precursor; IL-1α precursor has sufficient activity whereas IL-1β precursor is inactive.
