Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine produced by various cells such as monocytes, tissue macrophages and keratinocytes. IL-1 receptor belongs to Toll-like receptor (TLR) family, and there are many subtypes. IL-1β and IL-1α bind to Type I IL-1R and transduce signals into the cells through IL-1R AcP, which is coreceptor of IL-1R. IL-1β and IL-1α share 62% homology in their amino acid sequences, and both exhibit almost identical biological activities. What distinguishes the IL-1β and IL-1α are the extent to which they are glycosylated and the fact that the IL-1β precursor shows no activity whereas IL-1α shows significant activity in its precursor form.
