Interleukin 2 (IL-2) promotes the proliferation of T cells. This factor is secreted primarily by CD4+ T cells when stimulated by antigens and mitogens, but it is also expressed by naive B cells and thymocytes. In vitro, Il-2 induces the proliferation and differentiation of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, and acts as a proliferation factor of effector T cells. In vivo, it is believed to aid the differentiation within the thymus and the proliferation in the periphery of CD4+ and CD25+ Treg cells. Efforts to develop immunotherapies for cancers are focusing on the potential application of IL-2.
