Tau is one of the microtubule-associated proteins expressed predominantly in neurons of the central nervous system. Under normal physiological conditions, it regulates the structural stability of microtubules. In the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease, phosphorylated tau accumulates and forms neurofibrillary tangles. It has been shown that the density of these tau aggregates correlates with the severity of cognitive impairments.
