Overview / Applications
| Outline | <Lectin> Lectin is a protein well characterized by specific binding with sugars. It was originally found as a hemocyte agglutinating substance isolated exclusively from plants, and referred to as phytohemagglutinin; the current name has been used since it was found in bacteria and animals. Not only does it agglutinate red blood cells and precipitate polysaccharides and glycoproteins, it is also known to trigger lymphocytic mitosis. Lectin is currently used for the following purposes: - Hematocyte agglutination - As a mitogen (division accelerator) that causes blast formation and accelerated division of lymphocytes - Search for cell surface sugar chains - Specific detection/purification of glycoproteins and glycolipids <D-Galactose, N-Acetyl-D-galactosamine Binding Lectin> Protein with no sugar chain. A single peak in ion-exchange chromatography. |
