Overview / Applications
| Outline | <Lectin> Lectin is a protein having a prominent characteristic to bind sugar specifically. Because it was discovored as a substance to aggregate blood cells and was isolated exclusively from plants, it was called phytohemagglutinin, but the current name has been used since the discovery in basteria and animals. It is known to aggregate erythrocytes, sediment polysaccharides and glycoproteins, and induce mitosis in lymphocytes. Lectin is currently used for the following purposes: Aggregation of blood cells As a mitogen to induce lymphocyte blast formation and mitosis. Detection of a sugar chain on the cell surface Specific detection and purification of glycoproteins, glycolipids, etc. <D-Glucose and N-Acetyl-D-glucosamine-binding lectins> A protein with no sugar chain. |
