Anti Parvalbumin Antibodies

Parvalbumin (PV), a calcium-binding protein with a low molecular weight of approximately 12 kDa, serves as a marker protein for inhibitory GABAergic interneurons. Fujifilm Wako supplies guinea pig anti-parvalbumin antibodies that are useful for multiplex staining applications.

What is Parvalbumin?

Parvalbumin (PV) is a low-molecular-weight calcium-binding protein, with an approximate molecular weight of 12 kDa, primarily involved in the regulation of intracellular calcium signaling1). It is expressed in muscles and nerves, including various brain regions such as chandelier cells and basket cells in the cerebral cortex, as well as Purkinje cells in the cerebellum2-4).

Parvalbumin is recognized as a marker protein for inhibitory GABAergic interneurons. GABAergic interneurons in the neocortex are broadly classified into three types based on marker protein expression: (1) parvalbumin-positive neurons, (2) somatostatin-positive neurons, and (3) 5HT3a receptor-positive neurons4). Parvalbumin-positive cells are characterized by their rapid firing and repolarization compared to other neurons, and are involved in regulating neurotransmission, neural plasticity, and the formation and maintenance of oscillations5). It is believed that abnormalities in the expression of parvalbumin or parvalbumin-positive neurons may contribute to the development of schizophrenia.
