Analytical Standards for Pesticides and Veterinary Drugs

Pesticides and veterinary drugs are essential substances in food production. In Japan, the Food Sanitation Act establishes residue standards to prevent that toxic pesticides and veterinary drugs remaining in food do not have a negative impact on our health.
The Food Sanitation Act also establishes a "Positive List System" that prohibits the sale, etc. of foods in which pesticides, feed additives, and veterinary drugs remain in excess of certain amount, thereby addressing the vast variety of pesticides and veterinary drugs that remain in foods. Fujifilm Wako has about 1,400 analytical standards that are compliant with the Positive List System.
Furthermore, in 2023, Fujifilm Wako has become the first company in the world to obtain flexible scope of accreditation (comprehensive accreditation) as a producer of reference materials (RMs), which will enable Fujifilm Wako to quickly and stably produce certified reference materials (CRMs) for Pesticide Residue Analysis. Utilizing this flexible scope of accreditation, Fujifilm Wako will sequentially lineup CRMs.

Grade

Fujifilm provides 4 grades of analytical standards for pesticide residues and veterinary drugs.
The following table shows the comparison of analytical standard grades for pesticide residues and veterinary drugs.

Fujifilm Wako’s Grade for Pesticide Residue Analysis
[CRM]*1
TraceSure® Traceable
Reference Material
(TRM)
for Pesticide Residue Analysis
[non-CRM]*1
Accreditation system ASNITE*2 - -
Metrological reference NIST SRM, etc. Calibration by NMIJ or CERI -
MRA compatible - -
Certificate IAJapan certificate -
(Calibration certificate)
-
(Fujifilm Wako’s product manual)
Traceability SI traceable -

*1 Products sold as CRM (for Pesticide Residue Analysis) are labeled "XX Reference Material [CRM]" in the Product Name.

Ex) Imazosulfuron
[CRM]
Product Name: Imazosulfuron Reference Material [CRM]
Grade: for Pesticide Residue Analysis
[non-CRM]
Product Name: Imazosulfuron Standard
Grade: for Pesticide Residue Analysis

*2 A program operated by IAJapan to complements areas that cannot be covered by other accreditation programs based on domestic law.

Certified Reference Material (CRM)

for Pesticide Residue Analysis (CRM)

These series are SI traceable CRMs that have been valued using a CRM of National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST SRM), etc., using a method that has received flexible scope of accreditation from IAJapan. These series are attached with a certificate with IAJapan mark. This mark means that the purity (certified) value is SI traceable. In addition, IAJapan is a member of the Mutual Recognition Accreditation Agreement (MRA) between accreditation bodies in countries, so the certified values of this series are internationally accepted.

TraceSure®

This series is SI traceable CRM, which purity value is calibrated by an external calibration laboratory, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NMIJ) or Chemical Evaluation and Research Institute (CERI), using SI traceable method, and the purity (certified) value is determined by adding uncertainty obtained from Fujifilm Wako’s homogeneity evaluation and stability evaluation. These are analytical standards valued by based on Fujifilm Wako’s analytical conditions (GC, HPLC, quantitative NMR).
This series is attached the Wako product manual described content value, cautions in analysis, analysis condition and chromatogram of products.

What is Flexible Scope of Accreditation?

“Flexible scope of accreditation as a producer of RMs” is a system that allows RMs that are valued using methods accredited by the NITE, a Japanese accreditation organization, to obtain comprehensive accreditation as CRMs. In the past, to produce CRM in Japan, it was necessary to obtain accreditation as a producer for each CRM, and this process was time-consuming. To solve this problem, NITE started the comprehensive accreditation system, and Fujifilm Wako is one of the first companies to obtain this accreditation.
We will utilize this accreditation to gradually renew analytical standards for Pesticide Residue Analysis and ICP analysis to CRM.

  • Need to get accreditation each time per product.
  • It takes time for CRM to be supplied.
