Noggin is a diffusible protein originally discovered in the embryology field as an antagonist of BMP-4, which plays an important role in the dorsoventral axis formation.
It prevents the occurrence of signal transduction by binding to BMP itself and thereby interfering with binding of BMP to its receptor. It is also a neural inducing factor, and induces differentiation to central nervous system cells when allowed to act on undifferentiated ectodermal cells.
