Solid-Phase Extraction Columns
For the analysis of food and environmental components, pretreatment of a sample is important to improve resolution and provide highly reproducible data.
The solid-phase extraction (SPE) is a method for extraction and purification of the target analyte using a small column packed with various carriers such as chemically modified silica gel or polymer gel. Compared to liquid-liquid extraction or column purification, it has the advantages of [1] good recovery and reproducibility, [2] easiness to operate, [3] fast processing of a large numbers of samples, [4] can use automated processing, [5] preference to processing of small amounts of samples and use of minimal solvents, and [6] no emulsion formation, and is used in a wide range of fields including food and environmental analyses.
Fujifilm Wako offers many lineups of solid-phase extraction columns and pretreatment syringe filters for use in pretreatments of HPLC analysis, GC analysis, and other various types of analyses.
Presep® series offers columns for pretreatments prepacked with various packing agents. You can use them for cleanup, extraction and concentration of samples. "Presep®" is a syringe type with one end open and "Presep®-C" is a cartridge type with both ends closed.

How to Select Solid-phase Extraction Columns
Select from packing agents
For a successful solid-phase extraction, it is important to select a packing agent suitable for the characteristics of the target chemical.
Packing agents | Features |
---|---|
PSA | A solid-phase binding N-propylethylenediamine with silica gel exhibits an anion exchange and weak nonpolar interaction as primary interactions. |
C18, Silica gel (SI) | Silica gel base solid-phase to exhibit performance for solid-phase extraction column analysis. It is characterized by focusing on the improvement of lot-to-lot reproducibility and no variation in quality as much as possible. The most versatile packing agent can be used in all areas including pharmaceuticals, foods and environments. |
RPP | A styrene-divinylbenzene polymethacrylate resin optimized for pretreatment is used as a packing agent. It has the advantage of better retention of polar compounds and less adsorption caused by interaction of basic compounds as compared to silica ODS packing agents. It shows excellent recovery rate and reproducibility and can be used in a wide range of pH. |
Agri | A styrene-divinylbenzene polymethacrylate (hydrophilic resin) is used as solid-phase and suitable for pretreatment of residual pesticides. It is also effective for highly polar, metal-coordinated components that have conventionally been considered difficult to collect. |
PLS3 | It is a column packed with nitrogen-containing divinylbenzene methacrylate, and is effective in retaining a wide range of compounds from polar to nonpolar. |
PBX | Surface-modified polystyrene divinylbenzene hydrophilic / hydrophobic balance packing agent is packed. And effective in retaining a wide range of compounds from polar to non-polar. |
Alumina, Florisil (FL) | This is a packing agent that utilizes separation by adsorption. It removes dyes and lipids in food and is suitable for cleanup during the analysis of residual pesticides. It is also effective for organochlorine pesticides. |
Polyamide | It is packed with polyamide resin, and strongly retains compounds with a phenolic hydroxy group and a carboxyl group. Suitable for analyzing paeoniflorin in Kakkonto, etc. |
SAX | It has both reverse-phase mode and ion exchange mode and is suitable for selective extraction of acidic compounds. Depending on the elution conditions, it is also possible to elute separately the counter ionic compounds and the neutral / same ionic compounds and extract the ionic compounds in the organic solvents. |
WCX, SCX | It has both reverse phase mode and ion exchange mode and is suitable for selective extraction of basic compounds. Depending on the elution conditions, it is also possible to elute separately the counter ionic compounds and the neutral / same ionic compounds and extract the ionic compounds in the organic solvents. |
Select from the intended use
Dedicated solid-phase extraction columns that are adjusted to maximize pretreatment performance for desired application are available. The product page contains abundant application data for each column.
Products | Advantages |
---|---|
Presep®Na2SO4 | Can be used for dehydration pretreatment for analysis and for dehydration of organic compounds. |
Presep®-C DNPH, Presep®-C Ozone Scrubber for Aldehyde Analysis | Presep®-C DNPH is a dedicated collection tube for collecting carbonyl compounds in atmospheric environment specified in the US EPA and their derivatization with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH). Presep®-C Ozone Scrubber is useful for the removal of ozone, which interferes with the collection of aldehydes and the derivatization with DNPH. It can be used in connection with Presep®-C DNPH. |
Presep® Multilayer Silica Gel, Presep® Acitive Carbon-impregnated Silica Gel for Dioxins Analysis | It is designed in accordance with JIS K0311 (Method for determination of dioxins and coplanar PCB in exhaust gas) and JIS K0312 (Method for determination of dioxins and coplanar PCB in industrial water and waste water), and most suited to pretreatment in dioxin analysis. |
Presep®PFC-Ⅱ for PFCs Analysis | Suitable for the pretreatment of trace organic fluorine compounds (PFCs / PFAS) with 4 to 18 carbon chains. |
Presep® PolyChelate for Metal Element Analysis | Suitable for extraction and concentration of trace metals in seawater, river water, wastewater and biological samples. It is also ideal for pretreatment such as matrix removal when measuring metal elements by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) or ICP optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). |
for Mycotoxin Analysis | It is a pretreatment column for efficient purification and concentration of mycotoxin in samples. Immunoaffinity columns: AFLAKING, MycoCatch Total Aflatoxin |
Presep®-C Agri for Residual Pesticides Analysis | Solid-phase extraction columns suited to the pretreatment of residual pesticides. It is also effective for highly polar, metal-coordinated components, etc., that have conventionally been considered difficult to collect. |
Presh-SPE for Metabolomics | It is a pretreatment column materializing both solid-phase extraction and quantitative reproducibility by the unique solid-phase derivatization technology (patented). Can be used to quantify amino acids, organic acids, short-chain fatty acids, sugars, etc. |
