Outline	MonosaccharideN-acetyl compound of galactosamine, a hexosamine.The D-type is widely distributed in animals, plants and microorganisms as components of glycoconjugates, particularly of proteoglycans (also called mucopolysaccharides), glycoproteins, and glycolipids.The synthetic pathway involves conversion of UDP-N-acetylglucosamine by UDP-N-acetylglucosamine 4-epimerase into UDP-N-acetylgalactosamine which is then incorporated into glycoconjugates by specific glycosyltransferases.
