Uronium type
Constructing an amide or ester bond by dehydration condensation from activating the carboxylic acid is a common approach but is afflicted with inherent problems resulting from condensation agents, particularly byproduct removal and racemization. Suppression of the racemization can be achieved from the addition of HOAt and HOBt but the addition of HATU and HBTU offers a superior result compared to DCC and many other choices.
