Reduction Reaction
Reduction, which can convert unsaturated bonds and specific functional groups into other structures, are often used in organic synthesis.
Among reduction , the common hydrogenation reactions are those wherein hydrogen gas and precious metal catalysts (such as palladium) are used. FUJIFILM Wako deal with palladium carbon (Pd/C) (a general reduction catalyst) as well as ARP-Pt catalysts (can be used for both oxidation and reduction). If various types of different functional groups are included in the target molecule, all of them may be reduced, thereby not producing the target compound; this is because Pd/C is highly active. In this case, a functional group-selective catalyst, for which the catalytic activity of Pd/C is adjusted in stages, is effective. Selective reduction reactions assist in shortening processes and developing new synthesis routes.
