The novel Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2; Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 is the causative virus of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak as a global pandemic on March 11, 20201-2.

SARS-CoV-2 is an enveloped and positive single-stranded RNA virus3. The process of SARS-CoV-2 entering into the host cells begins through the binding of the viral spike (S) protein to the receptors, the Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2) and dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP4), on Ciliated Bronchial Epithelial Cells or Type II Pneumocytes, and then are followed to the endocytosis pathway4.

Currently, the development of DNA/RNA vaccines targeting spike (S) proteins, recombinant protein vaccines, viral vector vaccines, live attenuated vaccines targeting the whole virion, and inactivated vaccines are underway5.
Multiple clinical trials are also in progress in the therapeutic drug development6. Therapeutic agents can be divided into two types depending on the target. One is that it acts directly on the virus and inhibits virus growth or virus invasion into human cells. The other is to relieve symptoms by increasing the immune response to the virus or inhibiting the inflammatory process.

SARS-CoV-2 Mutation Detection Kit

This kit is a detection reagent developed by FUJIFILM Wako's original design method. The one-step RT-qPCR method can detect the SARS-CoV-2 mutation. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, multiple variants of SARS-CoV-2 are emerging one after another. Some variants caused concerns about their strong level of infectiousness and diminished effectiveness of vaccines.
In the given situation, we released the kit for detecting N501Y, E484K, L452R and E484Q mutation.
Each mutation can be detected with high sensitivity and speed by these kits.

  1. Alpha variant (B.1.1.7): N501Y
  2. Beta variant (B.1.351) / Gamma variant (P.1): N501Y/E484K
  3. Delta variant (B.1.617.2) / Epsilon variant (B.1.427/B.1.429): L452R
  4. Kappa variant (B.1.617.1): L452R / E484Q
