Protective Group
When only a specific functional group in a compound is made to react among multiple functional groups, a method is used wherein all the other functional groups are temporarily converted into inert functional groups; subsequently, the compound is reacted. This reaction is called a "protection reaction", and the introduced moieties are called "protective groups". The reaction in which the protective groups are removed after the completion of the intended reaction is called a "deprotection reaction". It is essential that protective groups are introduced at high yields, while ensuring that they can be removed easily. In multistep reactions such as total synthesis, it is important for the synthesis strategy to select a type of protective group, deprotection method, and process that involves protection/deprotection. FUJIFILM Wako also deal with reagents for benzylation that proceed under neutral and acidic conditions.
