Growth Inhibitors / Mutagens

Growth inhibitors and mutagens have been used to control (regulate, modify) plant traits in the processes of human plant use.

As the name suggests, growth inhibitors are compounds that inhibit plant growth. Growth inhibitors not only contribute to elucidation of the mechanism of growth control of plants, but also are applied to growth control of agricultural crops and suppression of weed growth. It has been clarified that plants themselves actively utilize growth inhibitors, and a phenomenon called "allelopathy," in which plants release growth inhibitors to inhibit growth of other plants, has been observed in some plants. Materials used for allelopathy are known to include cinnamic acid, hydroxycinnamic acid, and neutral phenol.

Mutagen treatment is a mutation induction method that is used as frequently as irradiation. It is used to search for a causative gene in genetics or to obtain a mutant with a desired trait. Alkylating agents, such as ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) are commonly used as a mutagen. Colchicine, an inhibitor of tubulin polymerization, is used to produce polyploid plants
