Outline	The product is also called caustic soda, which is a typical alkali hydroxide compound. It exhibits "deliquescence", or dissolves absorbing moisture in the air. It is easily soluble in water, which is highly exothermic. The water solution is strongly alkaline. This is a substance widely used in the general chemical industry, but is especially important for rayon silk, papermaking industry, soap manufacture, organic synthesis, and sodium salt. In laboratories, it is used as an agent for analytical use, a drying agent, and a carbon dioxide absorbent. Amino Acid Analysis Reagents are high-purity reagents from which ninhydrin positive components, which would cause interference in the analysis, have been removed.
