Overview / Applications
| Outline | A polyether antibiotic produced by an actinomycete. It has antibacterial and antifungal action.It is an ionophore specific for monovalent metal ions. Its affinity is in the order of K>Rb>Na>Cs>Li, H.Its salt or weak acid is soluble in lipids and can permeate biological membranes. It enhances the membrane permeability of Na and K ions by forming chelates with metal ions and passing through hydrophobic regions in the biological membrane. |
