Overview / Applications
| Outline | Interleukin-5 (IL-5) is a hematopoietic growth factor produced by Th2 cells, activated mast cells and eosinophils. IL-5 exerts its function by binding to a heterodimer receptor composed of the IL-5 specific alpha chain receptor and beta c. Beta c is a co-receptor for IL-3, GM-CSF, etc., and is expressed in various cells, but the IL-5 specific alpha chain receptor is mainly expressed in eosinophils and their precursor cells. IL-5 acts on eosinophil progenitor cells that express this specific receptor, promoting eosinophil differentiation, proliferation, and superoxide production. IL-5 is also known to stimulate eosinophil differentiation and activation, and to be involved in cell immunity against parasitic infections and certain types of tumors, as well as allergic diseases such as bronchial asthma. |
