Overview / Applications
Outline | The moldy odor produced by environmental pollution in rivers and lakes is due to metabolic products of various abnormally proliferated actinomyces and algae. Geosmin in particular is considered to be most responsible for offensive odors in tap water because it has a strong earthy odor (or moldy odor) in a trace amount. It is used as a reference standard for analysis of geosmin. Geosmin Standard / Geosmin Standard Solution (1,000 micrograms/mL in n-hexane) for water quality testing.Offensive odor (moldy smell) in tap water due to water pollution in lakes and rivers has been raising problems recently in various places. This moldy odor is produced by the metabolic products of various actinomycetes and algae overgrown in catchment basins, and geosmin in particular is considered to be most responsible for offensive odors in tap water because it has a strong earthy odor (or moldy odor) in a trace amount. The ozonolysis and activated charcoal processing have been examined as methods for eliminating this offensive odor in water, and the analytical method by gas chromatography is also being discussed. Our company is supplying geosmin reference standard and geosmin standard solution as the reference standards used in these tests. The product has been synthesized through a long synthetic procedure and is guaranteed by GC, MS, NMR and IR.[Properties of geosmin]:Trans-1,10-dimethyl-trans-9-decalolMol.Wt.: 182.31, bp: 270 degrees C, [alpha]D -16.5 degreesIt develops, when a trace amount is dissolved in water, an offensive odor at 40 to 50 degrees C even at a concentration as low as 0.01 to 0.05 ppb. |
