Overview / Applications

Outline This product is used in the measurement of residual chlorine in drinking water, water in swimming pools, etc. One tablet of this product is dissolved in 5 mL of a water sample, and the pink color developed when the DPD reagent is oxidized to semiquinone is measured by colorimetry or absorption photometry.
Chlorine agents are used for sterilization and disinfection of drinking water and water in swimming pools. Chlorine agents exhibit disinfection activity as a hypochlorous acid in water, but the concentration is lowered by reaction with suspended solids, organic matters and metal salts in water and scattering in the atmosphere, and, consequently, the action potential is deteriorated gradually. Therefore, it is essential to measure residual chlorine in water in the aspect of hygienic control. At present, residual chlorine is measured mainly by the o-tolidine method, but o-tolidine was to be removed from the official methods on April 1, 2002, after its carciogenicity was pointed out. The DPD method is one of the alternatives. The DPD method determines residual chlorine by comparing the pink to pink-red color developed by the reaction of residual chlorine with ethyl-p-phenylene diamine (DPD) with the matching fluids for color. This product is a tablet for simple measurement of residual chlorine based on the DPD method mentioned in the Test Methods for Drinking Water. N,N-diethyl-p-phenylene diamine sulfate and anhydrous sodium sulfate are contained in the weight ratio of 1:24, and one tablet of the product is dissolved in 5 mL of a test water.
