A triazole fungicide, metconazole disrupts the ergostrol biosynthesis pathway by inhibiting the C-14 demethylation of the fungus. Metconazole has two adjacent stereocenters and can exist as a 1R5R- and 1S5S-cis isomer or a 1R5S- and 1S5R-trans isomer. A stereochemical mixture of metconazole generally contains 80-90% cis and 10-20% trans isomers. Metconazle is used in the production of grains and fruits, and has been approved in more than 30 countries including France, the UK, Germany, Korea as well as various nations in Latin America and Africa. It was approved in Japan in June 2003 under the Agricultural Chemicals Regulation Act.
