Overview / Applications
Outline | IL-1 had been called lymphocyte-activating factor (LAF) initially after discovery because of the effect activating T lymphocytes. It is released mainly from activated macrophages and activated monocytes, and is considered to play an important role in inflammation and immune response. Because of the diversified actions, IL-1 has names such as endogenous pyrogen (EP), mitogen protein (MP), helper peak 1, T cell-replacing factor? (TRF?, TRFM), B cell-activating factor (BAF), and B cell-differentiating factor (BDF). IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta are homologous in 62 % of the amino acid sequence and have almost the same biological activity. They differ in the amount of glycosylation and in that IL-1 beta exhibits activity when it is matured with ICE whereas IL-1 alpha has sufficient activity in a precursor. |
