Used as a marker for cone cells, thyroid hormone receptor-β2 (TRβ2) is a protein that is very popular among ophthalmology researchers. Rod and cone cells, the photoreceptors in the retinas of vertebrates, play an important role in color perception. TRβ2 is a high affinity receptor for triiodothyronine. TRβ2 belongs to the nuclear hormone receptor family and the NR1 subfamily and is essential for the development of M cones in the embryo retina.
