Dehydrogenases
Dehydrogenase is a general term for enzymes that catalyze the so-called "dehydrogenation reaction," in which hydrogen is removed from a substrate and transferred to another receptor. When the hydrogen receptor is oxygen, it is called an oxidase. In living organisms, dehydrogenases catalyze the oxidation of alcohols to ketones, aldehydes to carboxylic acids, and the formation of unsaturated bonds. Dehydrogenases play important roles in respiration and anaerobic metabolism, including oxidation and reduction of metabolic intermediates, maintenance of membrane potential, and active transport.
