Neutralization titration/Acid-base titration
This is a quantification method utilizing the neutralization reaction that occurs between an acid and a base. Titration of acidic samples with alkali standard solutions is sometimes called alkalimetry, and titration of alkaline samples with acid standard solutions is sometimes called acidimetry. There are many combinations of acids and bases that can be analyzed through neutralization reactions. If the sample is an acid or base that is sufficiently strong and the concentration is not remarkably low, a large pH change occurs around the equivalence point, allowing for easy determination of the end point based on the color change using an acid-base indicator. On the other hand, if the acid or base is very weak and titration is difficult due to the small change in pH in an aqueous solution, non-aqueous titration in an appropriate non-aqueous solution is used. Non-aqueous titration utilizes a phenomenon in which the strength of an acid or base changes depending on the solvent. For example, a compound that is weakly basic in an aqueous solution may become strongly basic in an acetic acid solvent, or a compound that is weakly acidic in an aqueous solution may become strongly acidic in N,N-dimethylformamide. This method is sometimes used for the titration of drugs that are not readily soluble in water.
