What is MCP-1 (CCL2)?

Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 (MCP-1), also known as CCL2, is a member of CC chemokine family and exhibits chemotactic activity toward monocytes and macrophages. Like many other chemokines, its expression is induced by proinflammatory stimuli such as TNF-α and IL-1. As an inflammatory mediator, MCP-1 is secreted not only by immune cells, such as monocytes and macrophages, but also by a variety of other cell types including vascular endothelial cells, fibroblasts, renal tubular epithelial cells, and smooth muscle cells.
MCP-1 binds to its receptor C-C Chemokine Receptor type 2 (CCR2), enhancing cytokine production by monocytes and macrophages1) and recruiting these cells to sites of inflammation, thereby prolonging inflammatory responses. Furthermore, MCP-1 released from Th2 cells activates fibroblasts, contributing to the progression of fibrosis, particularly in the liver, lungs, kidneys, and skin2).
MCP-1 plays a central role in the development of insulin resistance by driving inflammation through the infiltration of inflammatory macrophages into the adipose tissue of obese individuals.
MCP-1 is also emerging as a therapeutic target for chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, and metabolic syndrome1).

LBIS™ Human MCP-1 (CCL2) ELISA Kit is a sandwich ELISA kit designed for the quantitative measurement of human MCP-1 (CCL2). This kit enables highly sensitive quantification of MCP-1 (CCL2) in biological samples. The standard included in the kit is a recombinant protein produced in Escherichia coli.
