In Japan, The Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Act prohibits the addition of ingredients equivalent to pharmaceuticals to health foods and the labeling or advertising of health foods for indications that may be confused with those for drugs. In recent years, "unapproved or unauthorized drugs" in which drugs are added to so-called "health foods" claiming to promote weight loss or enhanced vitality have caused damage to health and have become a serious problem.
