Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) promotes lumen formation, cell migration and the proliferation and survival of endothelial cells. On the individual level, VEGF-A induces angiogenesis and vascular permeability. Expressed in vascular tissue, VEGF affects both normal and abnormal angiogenic processes. Because VEGF-A and its receptors are known to be significantly involved in tumor angiogenesis, the factor is being studied for possible applications in oncology.
