Application

Overview / Applications

Outline FGF (fibroblast growth factor) family recently established to constitute a super family with IL-1 was found as a growth stimulating substance of fibroblastin, as its name shows, in the pituitary gland. Subsequently, two species with acidic and basic isoelectric points, respectively, have been elucidated and are called FGF-1=acidicFGF, and FGF-2=basicFGF. While it drew attention for a high affinity to heparin (another name is HBGF: heparin-binding growth factor) and a potent neovascularizing effect, it has been shown to accelerate growth of not only mesodermal cells such as myoblasts, vascular smooth muscle, chondrocytes, osteoblasts and glia, but also nerve cells and epithelial cells such as renal tubules, alveoli and thyroid gland. In neovascularization, it accelerates digestion of basal membrane and chemostaxis, proliferation and differentiation of vascular endothelial cells. Therefore, development as a therapeutic for wounds, and for myocardial infarction, central nervous disorder improving agent as well as therapeutic for tumor cells by inhibition of FGF has been advanced. In the past few years, there has emerged an an opinion that the angiogenic effect is based on induction of VEGF by FGF. This product consists of 147 amino acid residues in total with Met at the N-terminal. Molecular mass: 16.5 kDa
