Overview / Applications

Outline <Electrophoresis/Blotting><Reagent for PAGE><Denaturant>
Trichloloacetic acid is highly deliquescent. Its aqueous solution is a strong acid comparable to hydrochloric acid, and a solution in water in concentration of about 30 % or lower is unstable in storage. It is extremely corrosive and rapidly causes skin and mucous damages. Besides for immobilization and denaturation of proteins, trichloroacetic acid finds wide application: e.g. as an agent for fractionation of body proteins and lipids, and as a selective herbicide in the form of its sodium salt.
<Histocytochemistry><Decalcification agent>
In preparing thin sections, the presence of bone tissue, calcification and calcinosis will hinder the preparation of desirable sections. The decalcification process is therefore required. The process involves decomposing calcium carbonate in tissues with acids into soft calcium salts to facilitate the preparation of thin sections. Decalcification agents must meet the following requirements.
- Decalcification is completed readily
- Decalcification does not cause tissue deformations such as swelling, contraction and lysis.
- Tissue stainability is not affected
- The process requires operations that are as simple as possible and inexpensive
<Other decalcification agent>
A solution in water with a concentration of about 5 % is used. Its rate of decalcification is not slow, which makes it a useful decalcification agent.
<Protein Engineering><Research for Higher-order Peptide & Protein Structure>
Allowable concentration: 1 mg/m3. It is strongly corrosive.
The product is deliquescent, and its solution in water is a strong acid.
