Outline	Barbiturate derivatives inhibit the function of all excitable tissues in a nonspecific manner and the central nervous system responds the most sensitively. They inhibit the brainstem reticular formation activation system, in paraticular, and this is noted as a sleep-inducing mechanism. They are divided into long, medium and short acting types according to the duration of action.Long-acting type (min. 6 hours)It is converted into the active metabolite (phenobarbital) in the body. Anti-epilepsia action (effective for grand mal and psychomotor seizure).
