Outline	Freund's adjuvant is often used to enhance antibody production. Antigen solution or suspension is mixed with equal volume of a mixture of surfactant and mineral oil to make a stable water-in-oil emulsion.There are two types of Freund's adjuvant, the incomplete Freund's adjuvant which contains no mycobacteria, and the complete Freund's adjuvant which contains mycobacteria.Complete Freund's adjuvant must be resuspended to disperse the mycobacteria that has settled to the bottom.Injection of antigen material in a mixture with certain other substances, instead of injection of the antigen material alone, can lead to greatly enhanced cellular immune responses such as antibody production and delayed hypersensitivity.These substances, which cause enhancement of immune response in the host such as antibody production, when it is given together with antigen, are called immunologic adjuvants.In general, adjuvant-assisted immunizations have the advantage over immunization using antigens alone that the amount of antigen produced is much greater and the period of antigen production is extended.
Precautions for Use	7.5 mg of heat-killed Mycobacterium tuberculosis, H37 Rv, is suspended in a mixture of 8.5 mL of Liquid paraffin (Mineral oil) and 1.5 mL of Span 80 per 10 mL.This product is suspended throughly before use.Ready to use because it is sterilized in an autoclave.
