It promotes proliferation and survival/maintenance of endothelial cells, neovascularization, and vascular permeability. It is expressed in vascular tissue, and is involved in both normal and abnormal angiogenesis. It also induces tumor metastasis and intraocular neovascularization. There are VEGFR-1 (Flt-1), VEGFR-2 (Flk-1/KDR), and VEGFR-3 (Flt-4) receptors. VEGF-A signaling is mediated through VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2.
