| Outline | <Pharmacologic and Physiologic Research><Peripheral Nervous System Active Substance> Nerve cell membranes are charged negatively inside and positively outside in the static state with high extracellular concentrations of Na+ and Cl- and intracellular concentration of K+. However, upon excitation of cells, permeability of Na+ in the cell membrane is increased remarkably, and inflow of a large amount of Na+ into cells changes ion distribution generating action potential accompanying depolarization. The excited site where action potential is generated transmits impulses by exciting adjacent static regions in succession. Local anesthetics block excitation conduction in the sensory nerve (anesthetic effect) by lowering Na+ permeability in cell membranes and inhibiting depolarization (stabilization of membrane) necessary for excitation. The product blocks excitation conduction of the nerve by suppressing membrane permeability which accompanies the passage of impulses.
