The musty odor that occurs in rivers and lakes due to environmental pollution is thought to be mainly caused by the metabolic products of various actinomycetes and algae. In particular, geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) can indicate a strong earthy (or musty) odor even in extremely small quantities.
