| Outline | Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is produced by various cells and is known as a cytokine that has a wide range of biological activities, including inflammatory responses, in the immune system, nervous system, endocrine system, hematopoietic system, etc. IL-1alpha and IL-1beta both bind to the same receptor, and their biological activities are almost the same, with no specific biological activity known for either. IL-1beta is processed from its precursor to a mature form by caspase-1 to express its biological activity, but in the case of IL-1alpha, it is said that the precursor already has sufficient activity. While IL-1alpha is a cell-bound cytokine, IL-1beta is a secreted cytokine. |
