Outline	Another name: 1,1-dimethoxy trimethylamine. It is an esterifying agent used in the pretreatment for gas chromatography.Carboxylic acid methyl esters are obtained by heating carboxylic acid with DMF-dimethylacetal.RCOOH + (CH3)2NCH(OR')2 -> RCOOR' + ROH + HCON(CH3)2Similar procedures with DMF-diethylacetal and DMF-di-n-butylacetal give peaks of palmitic acid ethyl ester and n-butyl ester, respectively. Hydrogen chloride-methanol solution, boron trifluoride-methanol solution and diazomethane have been used for esterification of fatty acids, cholesterol, triglycerides and amino acids.While these reagents are very reactive and easily processed after the reaction, they have drawbacks as diazomethane is toxic and highly explosive, HCl-MeOH has a strong irritating odor and BF3-MeOH is strongly corrosive.N,N-demethylformamide dialkylacetal has been developed by improving these drawbacks and it esterifies fatty acids, etc. easily by adding the reagent to carboxylic acid and heating.
