Outline	A biologically active substance produced by Cephalosporium aphidicola with antiviral activity. Ikegami et al. reported that aphidicolin shows specific inhibition of DNA synthesis in vivo, and Ohashi and Ikegami et al. demonstrated in in vitro studies that it specifically inhibits DNA polymerase alpha only. The action of the product varies depending on the cells to which it is applied. In urchins, for example, the action of the product is limited to the phase of DNA synthesis (S phase), and its action can easily be removed by dialysis, etc. Compared to the conventional inhibitors of DNA polymerase beta or of DNA polimerase gamma, for example ddTTP(2',3'-dideoxythymidine triphosphate), the product is considered to be highly specific, and compared to cell-synchronizing agents hydroxyurea and arabinosyl-cytidine, it is considered to be less cytotoxic.
