Overview / Applications
| Outline | Aluminium oxide is produced industrially by the Bayer Process. It strongly absorbs water, ammonium, and olefin. It is an excellent desiccant.There are three types of adsorbed water, and they are removed in the order of physically adsorbed water (at 100 to 120 degrees C), chemically adsorbed water (at 400 degrees C), and surface hydroxide groups (at 1000 degrees C).Due to its high hardness, aluminium oxide is used in applications as grinders, cutting tools, and abrasives. Its high melting point makes it useful as a heat-resisting material.Recently, aluminium oxide has been attracting attention as a raw material for new ceramics. |
